Virtualization

Utilize IT Resources Efficiently

  • A recent Survey of IT industry shows that 70 % of Physical servers are under utilized than their capacity and consumes more energy.
  • They introduce increase in capital and operating expenditures.
  • With virtualization capacity of the servers can be used more effectively,
  • Reducing the costs of power cooling and real estate as well as cost associated with managing the additional systems.

Fault Segregation

  • It’s easy to isolate the application error and fault that cause the problem in virtual environment. Error in one virtual machine doesn’t affect to other virtual machine running on the same server.

Rapid provisioning and availability

  • Disk of virtual machine can be treated as file on physical server so, it’s easy to cut, copy, paste or clone them.
  • You can create the new virtual machine from existing one with in few minutes or you can provision them to available if your existing virtual machine goes down.
  • By creating clone of existing virtual machine you can make your server deployment much easy.

Portability

  • In most cases you can import the virtual machine from one virtual environment to another.
  • You can move your live virtual machine form one physical server to another using Vmotion.

Mix Mode of Operation

  • Most of Virtual Products Supports multiple operating systems and multiple vendors so, co-existence between different operating systems is possible
  • Thus Windows can co-exist with Linux or UNIX and you can get the benefit from your investment in virtualization.

Physical to virtual migration benefits

  • Incase you might have some old system running your critical business application and it can’t be port on new operating system.
  • Still you can run them by virtualizing your physical system using physical to virtual conversion called P2V migration.
  • You can still leverage the benefit of mix mode operation using old operating system with new infrastructure.

Virtual Appliances

  • This new concept evolved with virtualization. There are number of products that can substitute your standard networking equipment such as router, firewall.

What should be virtualized?

This is the area where most of people are not aware.
Best examples of virtualization are:

  • Critical Web Application or Web server.
  • Database Server
  • Mail Server (exchange 2003)
  • Older applications.
  • ERP Applications.
  • Critical Financial Applications.
